All the cricket fans, no matter what part of the world they belong to, visualize only one man when someone starts talking about the Jersey no. 10, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar!
The man, over his career of 24 years adorned the number on his back and made it an emotion for the billions of cricket fans in India and abroad. Anyone who is a fan of cricket, is a sure shot follower of this legend. He carried his nation on his shoulders with pride over all the years he spent on the field with the same intent and determination as he carried it for the first time. And whenever people saw the jersey no. 10 or even talked about it, they just visualized one man wearing it, the legend himself, or as they say, The God of the Game of Cricket.
When the great man retired, all the cricket fans, and followers of the great man wanted the jersey no. 10 to be retired. No one wanted to see any other player wearing the same number jersey as the God, ever again.
But, a few months back, the BCCI happened to give the jersey number 10 to a newbie, Shardul Thakur. And it really didn’t go down well with the fans and followers of the game throughout the nation. There was criticism against the BCCI from all sides. People were angry at the BCCI as everyone had an emotional connection with the number, which was built over a long period of 24 years. And now, no one wanted that jersey number on the back of a newbie. It was considered an insult to the legacy of the great man.
And now, learning from the blunder, the BCCI has decided to unofficially retire the jersey number forever. Though the number cannot be officially retired as the International Cricket Council doesn’t has a provision for that, but the BCCI has sent out a message to the entire team, that the jersey number 10 will be unofficially retired from the international matches. No one will ever be allowed to wear the same jersey number as the “God of Cricket”.
It surely is a great move by the BCCI, as being a cricket fanatic and a die-heart follower of legend, even I don’t want to see anyone playing for the Indian Cricket Team wearing Jersey no. 10 ever again. The jersey has emotions, feelings and a lot of memories attached to it. For every cricket fan, that jersey will always be “Tendulkar”. It just cannot be anyone else, no matter how great a player he turns out to be. The greatest will always be, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
And I heartily thank the BCCI for deciding to unofficially retire the jersey and keeping the legacy safe forever.
